Go to Cronford.com's Dine Around the Bay to purchase half-priced restaurant [00:05.360 --> 00:14.720] gift certificates. Live, this is Cronford News at 8. Our water main break in Hercules is causing [00:14.720 --> 00:20.640] a massive leak there. Cronford's dial in shows us the work being done to fix the break. A large [00:20.640 --> 00:26.000] water line that broke here in the town of Rodale is causing problems for some East Bay Mud customers. [00:26.000 --> 00:29.840] A spokeswoman for the water company says shortly after three o'clock today, [00:29.840 --> 00:34.960] they received a lot of calls from customers in Rodale and Hercules reporting a drop in water [00:34.960 --> 00:40.480] pressure. After sending a crew out here near the intersection of Willow Avenue and Hawthorne Drive, [00:40.480 --> 00:47.040] they found a large water line about 24 inches in diameter had burst. Aside from a drop in water [00:47.040 --> 00:52.320] pressure, a couple of East Bay Mud customers also reported getting dirty water. An East Bay Mud [00:52.320 --> 00:58.000] spokeswoman says the rupture is also affecting the nearby Conoco Phillips refinery and CNH [00:58.000 --> 01:04.320] sugar. Crews have shut off that 24-inch line and the water is now leaking into Rodale Creek. Many [01:04.320 --> 01:10.880] residents say the water pressure is slowly returning to normal. Relieved? Yeah, because we need the [01:10.880 --> 01:16.880] water to, you know, cooking and take a shower. My life seems to be pretty normal. You know, we have [01:16.880 --> 01:22.400] water, we have electricity, everything. East Bay Mud is trying to find out what caused that line [01:22.400 --> 01:28.640] to rupture and they're not exactly sure when they'll have that line replaced or fixed. In Rodale, [01:28.640 --> 01:34.720] I'm Dahlia Cronfort News. A new auto man is in jail after an early morning DUI crash sent a [01:34.720 --> 01:40.640] teenager to the hospital. Cronfort's Marine Kelly explains what happened. Here you can see the driver [01:40.640 --> 01:46.800] stumbling during his field sobriety test conducted just minutes after police say he crashed his car [01:46.800 --> 01:52.320] into a 15-year-old boy. The point one five, he was almost double the legal limit. That's extremely [01:52.320 --> 01:57.200] drunk. You're not able to really function. The unidentified teenager who was struck had been [01:57.200 --> 02:01.840] walking with a group of four other kids as they attempted to cross this intersection of East [02:01.840 --> 02:08.640] Washington and Edith at 12.38 this morning. The 15-year-old was the first one to try and cross [02:08.640 --> 02:13.760] this orange X you see on the ground is where he was walking when the car hit him. There are no [02:13.760 --> 02:19.040] stop lights or stop signs here at this busy intersection but police say cars in three of [02:19.040 --> 02:24.720] the four lanes on this street stopped to let the group cross but the suspect driving here in this [02:24.720 --> 02:31.200] fourth lane apparently didn't see the teenagers or the other stopped traffic and kept on driving. [02:31.200 --> 02:35.520] Here you can see where the victim smashed against the suspect vehicle's front windshield. [02:35.520 --> 02:40.800] The boy was transported by ambulance with a broken leg. Police say the suspect 20-year-old [02:40.800 --> 02:46.160] Wesley Pickford had a clean driving record up to this point. He was booked into the Sonoma County [02:46.160 --> 02:52.240] Jail for felony DUI. It's a charge which could result in very serious and expensive consequences. [02:52.240 --> 02:57.760] You know DUIs can run anywhere from like in a legal defense for $10,000 and anytime you're [02:57.760 --> 03:03.040] talking about felonies there's the possibility of going to state prison. Maureen Kelly Cronford News. [03:03.040 --> 03:08.240] A Stockton woman is in jail accused of driving drunk then hitting and killing a pedestrian while [03:08.240 --> 03:12.960] her four children were in the car with her. Police say the 29-year-old hit the man just [03:12.960 --> 03:18.480] outside his home on New Year's Eve. The suspect faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, felony drunk [03:18.480 --> 03:24.160] driving and endangering her children. A new law that went into effect today targets repeat drunk [03:24.160 --> 03:28.960] drivers. Any Californian who is convicted of a DUI three or more times could have their license [03:28.960 --> 03:34.640] suspended for up to 10 years. That law was created after a San Mateo man was arrested for his ninth [03:34.640 --> 03:40.400] DUI. One of the bill's authors is San Mateo Assemblyman Jerry Hill. Another new law in San [03:40.400 --> 03:46.400] Jose band's plastic bags from all stores. Craig Sklar shows us what that means to the average grocery [03:46.400 --> 03:54.960] shopper. No more paper or plastic. Now it's paper or bring your own. This save mart store in East [03:54.960 --> 04:00.080] San Jose was ready offering free reusable canvas bags for early customers to use from now on. [04:00.080 --> 04:03.920] After that you'll have to buy them yourself. So plastic bags are out. So your choices? [04:03.920 --> 04:08.560] Well you can go paper bags which you got to pay a dime every time you use one or a reusable canvas [04:08.560 --> 04:13.360] bag but you got to remember to bring it with you to the store every time. Most customers are [04:13.360 --> 04:17.120] saying they accept the change in the name of protecting the environment and the landfills [04:17.120 --> 04:21.600] from endless discarded plastic bags. That's why San Jose passed the law in the first place. [04:21.600 --> 04:25.920] It's nothing new to me. I mean I've been using these for a couple years now so it's no really [04:25.920 --> 04:33.760] biggie to me. It's better than having those plastic bags and just go in the creeks in a hurt environment [04:33.760 --> 04:39.040] so this is a good way to go. Some though are irritated. They like the convenience of plastic. [04:39.040 --> 04:44.080] They're more handy. To me they are. A lot of people hate them but I don't. I enjoy the plastic bags. [04:44.080 --> 04:48.800] Critics say the law just adds cost to businesses and hardship for customers but Sunnyvale and [04:48.800 --> 04:53.600] Monterey will be joining San Jose in San Francisco with bands going into effect later this year. [04:53.600 --> 04:58.400] So remember to bring your reusable bag. It's likely to become a regular part of your shopping life [04:58.400 --> 05:03.920] in San Jose. Craig Spark on four news. Banana Sam the monkey is back home tonight at the San [05:03.920 --> 05:09.360] Francisco Zoo after he was stolen two days ago. Police say the 17 year old squirrel monkey was found [05:09.360 --> 05:14.880] by a man at an nearby park. The man lured the pocket size primate into his backpack. Police are [05:14.880 --> 05:19.760] not sure exactly who took the monkey however the zoo has increased security because vandals cut two [05:19.760 --> 05:26.160] holes in the mesh of the monkey exhibit to get that monkey out. He was trembling and hungry last [05:26.160 --> 05:31.920] night but I'm pleased to report that he is in good health and calm today. He's eating well. [05:31.920 --> 05:36.560] His stool is fine. He looks to be in great health. We received a call from the police last night that [05:36.560 --> 05:41.360] someone had called into them and had been able to lure a squirrel monkey back into a knapsack. [05:42.000 --> 05:46.800] The police are still investigating the matter. All I know is that the call was made from stern [05:46.800 --> 05:52.160] groves so allegedly the monkey was found in stern groves. We were very fearful but we're [05:52.160 --> 05:56.560] grateful. He seems to be in good shape. He unfortunately is on his own right now as we [05:56.560 --> 06:00.880] examine him and we hope we can return him back to his fellow colleagues here at the exhibit. [06:00.880 --> 06:05.840] How long will he be in quarantine? You know can be anywhere up to 30 days depending on [06:05.840 --> 06:08.880] how we response to medical tests. We hope it's sooner than that of course though. [06:09.760 --> 06:15.840] Back in 2000 another animal was stolen from the San Francisco Zoo. A mother koala and her baby were [06:15.840 --> 06:20.560] taken from their enclosure in 2000. They were later found in the San Francisco home. They were okay [06:20.560 --> 06:25.360] but hungry. They had been taken by two teenagers who wanted to give them to their girlfriends for [06:25.360 --> 06:34.480] Christmas. Gorgeous weather for this first day of 2012. We had mostly sunny skies and some warm [06:34.480 --> 06:40.800] temperatures that made it up into the 60s in a lot of locations. Upper 60s even 70 degrees for [06:40.800 --> 06:46.880] Mountain View today. These readings running about 10 degrees above normal in a lot of spots around [06:46.880 --> 06:52.640] the Bay Area and it's going to remain on the warm side through this coming week the first week of [06:52.640 --> 06:58.000] 2012. The mild temperatures continue into this evening right now. Lots of spots checking in [06:58.000 --> 07:03.040] in the 50s. It's 54 degrees in San Francisco as well as Mountain View San Jose right now. [07:03.040 --> 07:09.440] 53 and the overnight lows for tonight and into tomorrow morning will be relatively mild as well. [07:09.440 --> 07:15.040] We're going to see increasing low clouds as we go into tonight and some valley fog developing [07:15.040 --> 07:20.560] for the north bay valleys. Santa Rosa and Fairfield could see some low visibility for tomorrow morning. [07:20.560 --> 07:25.520] Temperatures not as cold as what we've seen. Mid 40s San Francisco and Oakland coolest spots in [07:25.520 --> 07:31.840] the north bay into the mid 30s. Now going through the day we're going to see some high clouds [07:31.840 --> 07:36.240] sunshine mixed with the clouds through the day as a weather system makes its way through the Bay Area. [07:36.240 --> 07:41.360] Any chance for wet weather though is going to stay to our north. Look for high temperatures not [07:41.360 --> 07:46.640] quite as warm as what we've seen. What's still pretty nice upper 50s and low 60s. I'll talk [07:46.640 --> 07:51.840] more about the weather for this first week of 2012. Coming up Vicki. Well the Oakland Raiders [07:51.840 --> 07:56.160] needed a win today for a chance to get into the playoffs. Despite a late push they just couldn't [07:56.160 --> 08:02.720] get it done. San Diego Chargers defeating the Raiders 38 to 26. 49ers are already in the playoffs [08:02.720 --> 08:07.680] today. They played to keep their second seed which means a buy in the first round of the playoffs. [08:07.680 --> 08:13.120] The Niners defeated the St. Louis Rams today. Now to decision 2012, a final push from the Republican presidential [10:49.920 --> 10:56.720] candidates before the Iowa caucus and with only two days to go, a new poll suggests Romney and [10:56.720 --> 11:00.720] Ron Paul will battle it out for the top spot. Barbara Hall shows us where the candidates are [11:00.720 --> 11:07.440] stomping today. A political fight to the finish line before the first real voting of the 2012 [11:07.440 --> 11:13.840] presidential race. The latest Des Moines Register poll shows Mitt Romney and Ron Paul neck and neck. [11:13.840 --> 11:20.400] Paul says his campaign is picking up momentum. Former Senator [11:34.640 --> 11:40.000] Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania rounded out the top three in the poll. My surge is going to come on [11:40.000 --> 11:45.520] January 3rd. Iowa's governor seems to agree. [11:55.440 --> 12:02.400] My goal is as governor, unite the Republican party, attract the independence and defeat [12:02.400 --> 12:07.280] Obama. [15:04.800 --> 15:08.400] History was made in Hawaii today after the stroke of midnight. [15:08.400 --> 15:12.960] Several same sex couples took advantage of a new law that allows civil unions. [15:12.960 --> 15:20.000] Dick Alguyer was there for the celebration. We now pronounce that you are legally joined [15:20.000 --> 15:30.640] as partners in life. After midnight in the opening moments of 2012, the first civil unions [15:30.640 --> 15:36.560] became official in Honolulu. The event was held at a beautiful private home in Aina Hina. It was [15:36.560 --> 15:42.160] organized by a number of gay, lesbian and transgender activist and support groups. [15:42.160 --> 15:46.880] The celebration began on New Year's Eve. There was a party, a recognition ceremony, [15:46.880 --> 15:52.640] to honor those who have fought for civil unions for so many years and then the unions. [15:52.640 --> 15:56.000] Without beginning or end, they symbolize eternity. [15:56.800 --> 16:01.760] Reverence from local churches presided over the civil unions. The couple said they wanted [16:01.760 --> 16:07.520] their unions to become official as soon as possible. We really don't want to wait any longer because [16:07.520 --> 16:17.200] we have been together for 33 years waiting for our opportunity and our rights and everything [16:17.200 --> 16:25.280] that goes with it. So why wait? The historic part of it for me is that to be one of the firsts to [16:25.280 --> 16:30.560] open that door so that the rest of them after us, you know, there's others out there that want to [16:30.560 --> 16:35.520] do this and they can show them, you know, we can show them, you know, hey, you love somebody, [16:35.520 --> 16:40.720] you have the right to be with them the rest of your life also. They say the official recognition [16:40.720 --> 16:48.080] is important. It means that our state supports us and that's a really good feeling after all this [16:48.080 --> 16:55.600] time and it'll be that much easier for those who come after us. And they have a message to other [16:55.600 --> 17:02.880] same-sex couples. Our message is go for the gustos. Like they say in Hawaii, go for broke. [17:02.880 --> 17:11.600] Don't be ashamed. Hawaii is not the only state allowing same-sex unions. Delaware saw 400 people [17:11.600 --> 17:20.400] tie the knot today. Thanks to their new law. Well, here's the view from Twin Peaks this afternoon [17:20.400 --> 17:26.400] for San Francisco this January 1st, 2012. A beautiful day, mostly sunny skies in the temperature [17:26.400 --> 17:34.000] in San Francisco up to 61 degrees. So we're starting off dry and warm and that's the way it's been [17:34.000 --> 17:38.080] lately around here. Right now live San Francisco looking at the Embarcadero. And by the way, [17:38.720 --> 17:44.720] this very shot last night on Cronford Midnight. A beautiful fireworks display over the city [17:44.720 --> 17:49.200] and we have some more nice weather to talk about for tonight. Temperatures in the 50s right now. [17:49.200 --> 17:55.760] It is mild ocean beach 53 degrees Berkeley at 54. Pittsburgh and Petaluma cooler, but still [17:55.760 --> 18:02.080] not too bad in the mid 40s. Here's the satellite view and we have a weather system offshore for [18:02.080 --> 18:08.640] tonight. This system, though, like we've seen so much of lately is going to stay to the north. [18:08.640 --> 18:13.280] That's where all the rain is going to be. We're going to see some cloudiness out of this for [18:13.280 --> 18:17.920] tomorrow. So as we go through the night tonight, look for the clouds to increase. We'll wake up [18:17.920 --> 18:23.920] to mostly cloudy skies for tomorrow morning and then look for partly sunny skies in the afternoon. [18:23.920 --> 18:29.120] So it'll be a mixture of sunshine and high thin clouds and this dry weather we've seen is going [18:29.120 --> 18:36.320] to stick around at least through next weekend. So no relief in sight from this spell of rain, [18:36.320 --> 18:41.360] free days. Here's future cast midnight tonight and we'll watch the clouds increase as we go [18:41.360 --> 18:46.480] through the overnight hours. There it comes. All the rain up here around Eureka to the north of [18:46.480 --> 18:51.440] Ukaya. There originally was a chance for showers around Santa Rosa, but that is now out of the [18:51.440 --> 18:56.240] forecast. Look for clouds in the morning, partly sunny afternoon, and then the clouds will clear [18:56.240 --> 19:02.080] out for tomorrow night. And as far as the rainfall totals go for December, one of the driest [19:02.080 --> 19:07.440] December's on record. Oakland, San Jose and Santa Rosa picking up less than a tenth of an inch [19:07.440 --> 19:12.880] for the entire month. Typically we see much more than that and a lot of locations around the Bay [19:12.880 --> 19:18.240] Area. It was the second driest December on record. Now for tomorrow morning, cloudy skies, [19:18.240 --> 19:22.560] mostly cloudy. Could see some fog here in the North Bay Valley's Fairfield, Santa Rosa, mid to [19:22.560 --> 19:27.680] upper thirties, low to mid forties by the bay with highs in the afternoon, not quite as warm [19:27.680 --> 19:34.240] because of the cloud cover. Upper fifties and low sixties and looking ahead at the next seven [19:34.240 --> 19:40.400] days this first week of 2012. Well, it's looking pretty nice. We're going to see dry conditions [19:40.400 --> 19:46.240] once again and morning fog, afternoon sunshine through much of this week and continued warm [19:46.240 --> 19:50.800] temperatures mid to upper sixties for Tuesday and Wednesday. There's a system coming by for [19:50.800 --> 19:55.920] Thursday. All the rain stays to the north with that one as well and dry weather through next [19:55.920 --> 20:01.040] weekend. Make them and break them seems to be the theme for many of us who make promises for [20:01.040 --> 20:06.400] the new year only to stumble weeks later. But as Karen Kafa tells us in this week's clicked in, [20:06.400 --> 20:09.360] your smartphone could be your resolution solution. [20:09.360 --> 20:22.080] Out with old habits in with the new. I'm going to join a gym and become more active. I'm going to [20:22.080 --> 20:27.920] try to drink more water because I drink too much diet soda. New year's resolutions are easy to make [20:27.920 --> 20:32.720] and even easier to break. Have you guys ever had a resolution that you didn't quite stick with? [20:32.720 --> 20:38.160] Yes. What was that? Going to diet. It was a stop biting my nails, but then never worked out. [20:38.160 --> 20:43.680] So what if you had a reminder in your pocket every day? That's the goal of smartphone apps like [20:43.680 --> 20:50.480] Resolutions 2012, which lets users choose goals, identify habits they need to change to meet them [20:50.480 --> 20:56.240] and track progress. Weight loss is a popular resolution each year. The Daily Burn app for [20:56.240 --> 21:01.520] iPhone manages workouts and calorie counts. The new weight loss app for Android gives [21:01.520 --> 21:06.720] day by day tips on eating, working out and slimming down. The My Quick Coach app from [21:06.720 --> 21:12.000] Livestrong is for those who want to kick butts in 2012. The app presents daily guidelines for [21:12.000 --> 21:18.000] quitting smoking gradually over time or helping you go cold turkey. The quitter app for iPhone [21:18.000 --> 21:23.200] tallies how much money you've saved since putting down your last cigarette and keeping the resolution [21:23.200 --> 21:28.880] can require a support system. I want to try to eat healthier. We've got to be a role model and [21:28.880 --> 21:34.720] show them more how to eat healthy. Try posting your goal on social media so connections can cheer [21:34.720 --> 21:41.920] you on. I'm Karen Keitha and you're now clicked in. Making more room for art in the city. We've wrapped up these Mazdas with 0% APR for 60 months for snow payments for 90 days, [23:22.720 --> 23:29.280] but only through January 3rd. If it's not worth driving, it's not worth building. We build Mazdas. [23:29.280 --> 23:36.400] What do you drive? I'd like to think I'm a smart guy and can handle any situation, [23:36.400 --> 23:40.880] but when a drunk driver totaled my motorcycle, my friend insisted that I call Attorney Neil [23:40.880 --> 23:46.880] Kovara first before I called my insurance company because even your own insurance company can and [23:46.880 --> 23:52.640] will use what you tell them against you. Neil Kovara's 35 plus years of experience paid off. [23:52.640 --> 23:56.800] I didn't know I'm a cent till he settled my case and he got me a lot more money than the [23:56.800 --> 24:01.440] insurance company offered. Calling Attorney Neil Kovara was definitely the smart choice. [24:03.040 --> 24:13.440] Let's go to Vegas. Let's go to Vegas. Maybe we should head back to the dealership first. Cron4 News, your source for the most local news in the Bay Area. [24:38.160 --> 24:44.000] From people you know, people you trust, relentless coverage during breaking news. [24:44.000 --> 24:53.520] Cron4 is the Bay Area's news station. Now, time for the Cron4 Tech Report with Gabe Slate. [24:53.520 --> 24:58.800] I'm at SFO. I've been talking to travelers about this issue. Most people I talked to were [24:58.800 --> 25:04.080] unaware of it, but they did have a reaction to that. More on that later. First, here's what's [25:04.080 --> 25:10.080] going on. Google has launched an online flight fare finder service. You can find it at google.com [25:10.080 --> 25:16.400] backslash flights. It's their version of Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity or Kayak. You just put in the [25:16.400 --> 25:22.000] cities you want to fly to and from and Google lists out the prices of that flight. They compare [25:22.000 --> 25:26.320] the airlines to find you the cheapest ticket. If you click on those ticket prices, you are taken [25:26.320 --> 25:31.440] directly to the airline's website to purchase the tickets. I thought the service was great. I found [25:31.440 --> 25:36.240] it really fast and easy to use. But here's the problem. Now that Google has an online travel [25:36.240 --> 25:41.440] service, it puts Google in direct competition with sites like Expedia, Hotwire, Travelocity, [25:41.440 --> 25:46.640] Orbitz, Kayak and Priceline. And those websites are claiming that when you do a basic search [25:46.640 --> 25:52.880] for travel on Google.com, something like Flights from San Francisco to New York, Google puts its [25:52.880 --> 25:59.040] flights fare service higher within the results than the other online travel websites. Before [25:59.040 --> 26:03.200] Google offered their new service, sites like Orbitz and Expedia would be up at the top of the [26:03.200 --> 26:08.720] results. These middlemen online travel sites depend on some of their traffic coming from generic [26:08.720 --> 26:14.160] travel searches through Google's search site. So they're upset and feel it's unfair that they [26:14.160 --> 26:19.520] have been pushed down in the list of results. In a statement Google sent to me, they said this, [26:19.520 --> 26:24.560] like any other partner, Google needs to honor the airline's distribution decisions with the flight [26:24.560 --> 26:30.400] search feature. That means we currently can only show airlines in the booking links. We're exploring [26:30.400 --> 26:35.840] advertising opportunities within the page to showcase other partners. So it sounds like Google [26:35.840 --> 26:40.320] will try to make it a little more fair for their competitors in the near future. This could turn [26:40.320 --> 26:45.200] into a Department of Justice antitrust issue. There could be a big lawn and drawn out lawsuit. [26:45.200 --> 26:49.680] We'll have to wait and see how this shakes out. Here at SFO, I talk to travelers about all of this [26:49.680 --> 26:54.880] and several people brought up a good point. People who use Kayak Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, [26:54.880 --> 27:00.000] these types of sites often, they just go to those websites to do their travel shopping. [27:00.000 --> 27:04.720] They don't find those sites through a Google search. So they'll just keep doing what they're doing [27:04.720 --> 27:11.440] unaffected. Google Fairfinders just now another of the dozen online travel tools that they can use. [27:11.440 --> 27:16.320] Gabe Slate, Cron For News. Could this Sacramento Delta be another Katrina-like [27:16.320 --> 27:20.240] flood in the making coming up for you to see why experts are worried about a possible breach in [27:20.240 --> 27:25.360] the Delta levees? [30:02.400 --> 30:06.160] Federal authorities say they sent fighter jets to check out a plane headed to the [30:06.160 --> 30:10.800] Bay Area this morning. That flight was going to Oakland from Santa Monica. The FAA says [30:10.800 --> 30:16.400] that air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the plane near Ventura. They sent the jets [30:16.400 --> 30:20.560] as a precaution. Air traffic controllers eventually got into contact with the plane and the jets [30:20.560 --> 30:25.680] were called off. That plane landed in Oakland without incident. Oakland police are still searching [30:25.680 --> 30:30.160] for the person who shot and killed a five-year-old Friday night. Now they're offering a reward. [30:30.160 --> 30:35.040] Gabriel Martinez Jr. was with his family at the taco truck that they own on International [30:35.040 --> 30:40.000] Boulevard. Police say that the suspect ordered a taco, started eating, then just started shooting. [30:40.000 --> 30:43.680] Gabriel was hit in the stomach. Police do not know why the man opened fire there, [30:43.680 --> 30:48.880] teaming up with prime stoppers to offer a $25,000 reward for his arrest. [30:48.880 --> 30:53.680] There are several new laws that go into effect today. Cronford's Alejandra Sarabal tells us [30:53.680 --> 31:00.560] what to expect. California employers will no longer use the federal e-verify program to [31:00.560 --> 31:06.240] determine the eligibility of employees to work in the U.S. unless it's required by federal law. [31:06.240 --> 31:12.320] And employers will be banned from requesting consumer credit reports to evaluate employees [31:12.320 --> 31:17.200] unless the position they're applying for meets certain criteria. Now students who enter the [31:17.200 --> 31:23.520] country illegally will be eligible to receive private financial aid at public colleges. Now [31:23.520 --> 31:29.920] when it comes to your car, it can't be impounded at a sobriety checkpoint if the only offense is [31:29.920 --> 31:36.800] not having a valid license. Now starting January 1st, you can register to vote online and it will [31:36.800 --> 31:44.480] be illegal to sell, trade and distribute shark fins. Alejandra Sarabal, Cronford News. [31:48.000 --> 31:54.160] Well we have new laws for 2012 with the same weather pattern here as we had last year in 2011. [31:54.160 --> 31:59.520] Very dry and sunny. Now for tonight, clear skies over the bay but there are some clouds beginning [31:59.520 --> 32:04.000] to develop at the coast and those clouds are forecast to move into the bay overnight tonight. [32:04.000 --> 32:08.800] So for tomorrow morning, it's going to be a mostly cloudy start with some fog into the north [32:08.800 --> 32:14.240] bay valley. Visibility could be limited at times as we go through the day. We're catching the [32:14.240 --> 32:18.080] tail end of a weather system and that's going to produce some clouds but it'll be a mixture of [32:18.080 --> 32:23.600] sunshine and some high clouds for the afternoon. No rain expected from this weather system at [32:23.600 --> 32:29.840] least not here in the bay area. Temperature wise, 6 a.m. 30s, coolest valleys north and east, 40s [32:29.840 --> 32:34.320] by the bay and as we get into the afternoon, because of the cloud cover, the temperatures [32:34.320 --> 32:40.560] will not be quite as mild as what we had today. So look for highs in the upper 50s in blue and some [32:40.560 --> 32:45.280] lower 60s in the green for the south bay. In the Sierra today, here's Lake Tahoe, [32:45.280 --> 32:51.520] heavenly, lots of sunshine. Temperatures here today in the mid 50s and we're going to see more [32:51.520 --> 32:56.240] warm weather continue for the next few days. It'll be cloudy for Monday, Tuesday, [32:56.240 --> 33:02.320] Sunday, possibly some record highs in the mid 50s and the dry weather continues for this week. [33:02.320 --> 33:05.920] I'll talk more about the forecast coming up in a few minutes. Vicki. All right, Brian, [33:05.920 --> 33:10.960] well, with the winter rains yet to come, it's hard to imagine that this was the scene in the [33:10.960 --> 33:17.440] Delta just five years ago. 2006 came in with a huge storm that sent the Sacramento River spilling [33:17.440 --> 33:22.480] its banks, flooding thousands of acres and hundreds of homes. Now state planners are warning [33:22.480 --> 33:27.200] that more than the levees are substandard and without billions of dollars of repairs, [33:27.200 --> 33:31.360] they represent a danger to lives, agriculture and drinking water supplies. [33:31.360 --> 33:36.720] Crown First Catherine Heenan has details. The damage was easily visible from space. [33:36.720 --> 33:40.720] You can see the Sacramento River spread out over the surrounding countryside. [33:40.720 --> 33:44.800] The warnings have been coming in for years. There are two kinds of levees, those that have [33:44.800 --> 33:50.160] failed, those that will fail. Now the state has released its first comprehensive plan for fixing [33:50.160 --> 33:56.560] the aging flood control system. There are about 1500 miles of levees in the Sacramento River basin. [33:56.560 --> 34:02.080] More than half are classified as higher concern. The report was commissioned after the Hurricane [34:02.080 --> 34:07.840] Katrina disaster. It says that New Orleans is now protected from the kind of flood that could come [34:07.840 --> 34:15.360] once in 250 years. St. Louis is protected from a once in 500 years storm. For Sacramento, [34:15.360 --> 34:21.680] it's a once in 85 year storm. Fixing all of that will take money of course. Five years ago, [34:21.680 --> 34:26.400] voters approved a five billion dollar bond measure. About half the money has been spent [34:26.400 --> 34:32.880] bringing the levee system into the 21st century. The latest estimate, another 12 billion will be [34:32.880 --> 34:38.480] needed to finish the job. The Central Valley flood protection board has until June to approve [34:38.480 --> 34:44.160] that plan. A Georgia woman says that her two brothers successfully escaped from Alcatraz [34:44.160 --> 34:49.120] years ago. Marie Anglin Widener says that her brothers are two of the three men credited with [34:49.120 --> 34:55.040] the only escape from Alcatraz. She says that they robbed an Alabama bank with a toy gun back in [34:55.040 --> 35:00.560] 1958. They were captured but kept trying to escape from prison, so they were sent to Alcatraz. She [35:00.560 --> 35:07.760] believes that they're still alive today. The only reason they put them in Alcatraz was because [35:07.760 --> 35:13.760] they could not keep them anywhere else to put them. They kept getting away. We know they're okay. [35:13.760 --> 35:20.320] Widener plans to come to San Francisco to mark the 50th anniversary of their escape this summer. [35:20.320 --> 35:25.360] The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is moving ahead with its expansion plans. Here is a picture [35:25.360 --> 35:30.560] of before and after the expansion. Well, the Planning Commission has already approved the [35:30.560 --> 35:36.480] environmental impact report. Cronford's Reggie Kumar shows people the new face of downtown San Francisco. [35:36.480 --> 35:42.960] SF MoMA officials tell Cronford when they first moved into the current facilities in 1995, [35:42.960 --> 35:49.120] the museum housed 12,000 works. Since then, the collection has doubled in size and attendance [35:49.120 --> 35:54.160] has tripled. That's why the new gallery is needed. It will be constructed between Mina [35:54.160 --> 35:59.360] and Howard Streets and connect to the rear of the museum. Officials say once the new buildings [35:59.360 --> 36:05.760] open, they will have 130,000 square feet of space to enhance exhibits and expand educational [36:05.760 --> 36:12.000] programs. One of the architects said the design responds to the unique physical and urban terrain [36:12.000 --> 36:17.680] of San Francisco. Some have mixed feelings about how it's going to look. The first time I looked [36:17.680 --> 36:24.080] for the museum, I imagined it to be a unique building. It didn't really stand out the first time. [36:24.080 --> 36:27.520] I had to ask people and they're like, oh, it's right there across the street. I was like, oh, [36:27.520 --> 36:34.160] okay, really? So I think like as it was from far away and I would see this building, I would [36:34.160 --> 36:38.560] immediately like recognize, oh, yeah, it's the museum for the modern arts. It's not exactly the [36:38.560 --> 36:42.800] most beautiful building that I've ever seen, but San Francisco is known for stepping outside of the [36:42.800 --> 36:48.480] box a little bit. So I don't think it's a horrible addition. If all goes as planned, the new museum [36:48.480 --> 36:56.720] will open up behind the existing one in 2016. The price tag $555 million. Nearly all of the funding [36:56.720 --> 37:02.320] is being raised through a private endowment. This is not a city or state funded project. [37:02.320 --> 37:08.640] In San Francisco, Reggie Kumar, Cronford News. [39:33.920 --> 39:38.880] A Kansas man is paying a stiff price for furniture he bought back in 2008. [39:38.880 --> 39:43.520] He didn't pay his credit card bills and wound up in jail. And now he's warning others to pay [39:43.520 --> 39:50.800] attention when creditors take legal action. Mary Snow has more. For 57 year old James Davis of [39:50.800 --> 39:56.000] Kansas, using a credit card to buy this computer and some furniture is haunting him in ways he [39:56.000 --> 40:02.640] never imagined. In 2008 when the economy went south, Davis lost his job and fell behind on bills. [40:02.640 --> 40:07.920] The creditor took him to court. Davis admits he didn't show up and a bench warrant was issued. [40:07.920 --> 40:12.160] But he says he thought he rectified the situation by reaching a pay plan agreement [40:12.160 --> 40:17.440] until he was arrested in January. I was confused. Of course, I was humiliated. [40:20.960 --> 40:27.280] Somewhat mental disorder, I guess you could say. Davis spent several hours in jail before getting [40:27.280 --> 40:34.240] out on $250 bond. But he's now suing for unfair debt collection practices. The creditor refutes [40:34.240 --> 40:39.360] that in a legal response to the suit, writing the bench warrant was not issued for failure to [40:39.360 --> 40:44.880] make payments on the payment plan, but was issued for civil contempt for disobeying court orders. [40:45.680 --> 40:51.200] Outside of this case, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says there are others where people [40:51.200 --> 40:56.480] in debt are not aware that creditors are taking them to court and wind up arrested for not meeting [40:56.480 --> 41:02.240] a court date. It's a chain reaction that begins when they fail to pay their bills. In Illinois, [41:02.240 --> 41:06.080] and unfortunately my understanding is in other states in this country, there are people who are [41:06.080 --> 41:11.200] being put into prison right now because they're poor, essentially. Madigan says there are no [41:11.200 --> 41:16.720] hard numbers and these kinds of cases are on track nationwide. But she worries about complaints [41:16.720 --> 41:21.840] she's receiving. A lot of it stems from what's known as debt buying. So there are debt buyers out [41:21.840 --> 41:27.360] there who who are purchasing debt and then again they're using terribly aggressive and illegal, [41:27.360 --> 41:33.280] you know, tactics to collect it. But a trade group representing debt collectors says going [41:33.280 --> 41:38.560] to court to collect debt is a last resort and a spokesman disputes the claim that people are [41:38.560 --> 41:44.480] going to jail for their debt. Dettors prisons are illegal in the United States and so we're not [41:44.480 --> 41:50.560] seeing a return to debtors prisons. What we are seeing is that somebody who owes a debt [41:51.440 --> 41:56.880] and after many, many attempts to try to collect that debt, the creditor or the collector has [41:56.880 --> 42:02.800] taken the consumer to court. James Davis has a warning for others who have unpaid bills. [42:02.800 --> 42:12.080] If you have proper notice from a creditor and they are attempting to take you to court over [42:12.080 --> 42:17.920] that debt to pay very, very close attention to it. In response to complaints, the Federal [42:17.920 --> 42:24.640] Trade Commission says it's been encouraging states to make sure that consumers are notified if they [42:24.640 --> 42:32.240] are supposed to appear in court. Mary Snow, CNN, New York. [44:47.840 --> 44:54.720] So I hired renowned chef Gordon Ramsay. Oh, come on. It's disgusting. On you. What are you doing? [44:54.720 --> 45:00.560] It's raw, you idiot. Is this your first day? Congratulations. It's your last. Get out of here. [45:00.560 --> 45:06.240] At a time when it's easy to go overboard. Happy holidays. Acura invites you to be smarter and [45:06.240 --> 45:11.360] over-save during the season of Reason Sales event. Take advantage of attractive offers on the 2012 [45:11.360 --> 45:17.680] Acura TSX for well-qualified customers. A new roadhouse has joined the long list of Bay Area [45:17.680 --> 45:22.640] restaurants. Cath's Restaurant and Tavern opened last night just in time for New Year's Eve. Here's [45:22.640 --> 45:29.280] a look inside the colorful former stagecoach Stop and Bordello. If you find yourself along Highway [45:29.280 --> 45:36.000] 17 in Los Gatos, there's a really cool new old roadhouse. In fact, it's so old. It was a stagecoach [45:36.000 --> 45:41.120] Stop, among other things. Follow me. I guess I could saddle up to the bar. Yes, you certainly [45:41.120 --> 45:46.560] could. Have yourself a wonderful beer handcrafted. It just happened to be ready for me. So Mark [45:46.560 --> 45:55.280] Edwards, proprietor of Cath's Restaurant and Tavern. Yes. What's old is new again. My goal really was [45:55.280 --> 46:02.560] to keep it simple, yet have the best barbecue you could ever have. We have brought in a seven-time [46:02.560 --> 46:10.000] world champion barbecue chef, Paul Kirk. A lot of the chefs will say, Hickory calls them because [46:10.000 --> 46:14.400] it gives you that flavor. All right, let's check it out here. And then we'll throw this piece of [46:14.400 --> 46:22.640] wood here in the firebox. And the smoking begins. That's quite a smoker. And it gives you the flavor [46:22.640 --> 46:29.600] that you would not believe. Right in here is our upstairs banquet room featuring our 300-year-old [46:29.600 --> 46:36.080] bar. Wow. So what's up with all these guns here? Well, it is an old stagecoach Stop. So, you know, [46:36.080 --> 46:41.840] we thought how appropriate, but for the cowboys to leave their guns here at the bar. Last cowboy [46:41.840 --> 46:49.200] left this one. He'll be back in a week to pick it up. Is it true? This was once a cat house. [46:49.200 --> 46:56.800] So spoken. Yes, I believe so. I've heard that from numerous sources. If these walls could talk, [46:57.680 --> 47:04.560] smoke chicken ribs or pulled pork all under $20 in Los Gatos, Vicki La Vieja's Cron for News. [47:08.480 --> 47:11.680] Well, apparently not just great food, but great entertainment there as well. [47:12.320 --> 47:18.080] Hazy skies from Twin Peaks today, looking across San Francisco with temperatures made it up to the [47:18.080 --> 47:23.360] low 60s. And Frank, our photographer, saying the most people he's ever seen up there at Twin Peaks [47:23.360 --> 47:27.360] enjoying the view today on this New Year's Day. Right now, live Golden Gate Bridge, [47:27.360 --> 47:32.960] temperatures still mild right now. Most places checking in in the 50s, but it is a little bit [47:32.960 --> 47:41.760] cooler for Walnut Creek and Fairfield right now at 44 degrees. San Jose currently 53. Now, we do have [47:41.760 --> 47:48.720] a weather system that's rolling in for tonight. This should increase clouds for tomorrow. But [47:48.720 --> 47:54.080] once again, no chance for rain in the Bay Area. This pattern of dry weather will continue all [47:54.080 --> 47:58.560] the way. It started in November, December, one of the driest on record, and we're starting out [47:58.560 --> 48:04.640] January looking very dry as well. So for tomorrow morning, look for areas of low clouds and fog [48:04.640 --> 48:09.280] for the North Bay valleys. We will see some coastal clouds move into the bay for tonight [48:09.280 --> 48:15.840] after midnight temperatures mid 40s for tomorrow morning by the bay. Mid to upper 30s for the [48:15.840 --> 48:20.320] inland valleys. And as we go through the day, we'll see things warm up into the upper 50s and [48:20.320 --> 48:26.320] low 60s. Here's future cast at midnight tonight. Mainly clear, but watch these clouds begin to [48:26.320 --> 48:30.880] fill into the bay during the overnight. So we become mostly cloudy for tomorrow morning. [48:30.880 --> 48:36.000] There's the weather system up on the north coast, producing rain shaded in green and yellow. [48:36.000 --> 48:41.440] But this will move inland and not impact the Bay Area, at least with any rain. We will see clouds [48:41.440 --> 48:46.640] through the day. It'll be partly sunny for the afternoon mixture of clouds and sunshine. [48:46.640 --> 48:50.800] Then those clouds begin to clear as we get into the evening. High temperatures for the day, [48:50.800 --> 48:56.880] not quite as warm tomorrow as what we saw today because of the clouds. Still pretty nice, though. [48:56.880 --> 49:03.040] Low to mid 60s for the South Bay, upper 50s, low 60s inland valleys conquered Martinez while [49:03.040 --> 49:08.480] not Creek 59 degrees. Look for highs in the upper 50s and low 60s for the east shore. [49:09.360 --> 49:13.920] We'll have the clouds in the morning and then for the afternoon, a mixture of sunshine and [49:13.920 --> 49:20.320] high thin clouds. Mid to upper 50s San Francisco Ocean Beach Daily City Pacifica Redwood City [49:20.320 --> 49:26.240] up to 61 degrees could see some heavy fog here for the North Bay Valley's at least early on [49:26.240 --> 49:32.240] patchy fog. Santa Rosa Fairfield upper 50s, low 60s here. Here's the seven day around the bay [49:32.240 --> 49:38.720] and more dry weather is the theme here as we go into 2012. For Tuesday and Wednesday, [49:38.720 --> 49:43.600] it's going to be nice, though. Lots of sunshine, highs in the mid to upper 60s. There may be some [49:43.600 --> 49:48.640] low 70s around the Bay Area. For Thursday, there's another weather system, but like the one that's [49:48.640 --> 49:53.600] coming through tomorrow, this one to all the rain to the north of the Bay Area. We'll see a few [49:53.600 --> 50:00.080] clouds and then mostly sunny into next weekend. Vicki. Tom Cruz continues to draw movie goers [50:00.080 --> 50:05.760] and Kirstie Ali wants you to resolve to dance in 2012.
